"Rhetoric is what we have instead of omniscience." -Ann Berthoff
What does this mean? Read through your peers responses to what rhetoric is, grapple with what you know, and give a thoughtful explanation of this quote.
This quote means that instead of having all knowledge about everything in this world, we have the essence of a thing called rhetoric. This rhetoric provides us with insight and the ability to change people's mind with our words, thoughts, and text. Since no one can truly know every answer or aspect of life, rhetoric gives us the capability to find out what we truly believe and share it with the world using influence, motivation, and persuasion.
This quote means that while we cannot know everything, we can come closest through rhetoric. With discussion and persuasion of others we can learn about the world in ways we never thought about. By opening up to the world of opinions our knowledge will grow and we cna become well-rounded. With rhetoric we learn more about ourselves and our view of the world.
It basically means that instead of knowing everything, we have rhetoric or the art of persuasion. With everyone in the world not possibly being able to know everything, we can persaude them to think one specific way. Rhetoric can persaude them that maybe they are omniscience. People develop rhetoric, because we are not developed with omniscience.
This quote says the since we don't know everything in the world, we use rhetoric instead. We use rhetoric to persuade people to our ideas and beliefs. Instead of knowing everything, which we do not, we we can share what we know with everyone of the world, as well as gain the knowledge from others.
After reading through my peers responses I have started to get an understanding for what this quote means. Many people said that rhetoric was a form of persuasion and it also aids in possibly changing someone else's opinion on something by discussing it and speaking of it in a different way. This is like imniscience because imniscience is being all knowing and I feel like rhetoric is like that because the author is all knowing with their ideas that they present to persuade.
I believe the quote is referring to the fact that even though we are not able to know everything, we are almost given the power of omniscience through rhetoric. By being able persuade others into believing just as we believe/think/know, we are able to almost achieve a form of omniscience. By also utilizing rhetoric in writing or in speaking, we are able to change opinions or allow people to learn new insights into subjects they had seldom truly thought about before. By gaining new knowledge through the use of rhetoric, we become closer to the idea of omniscience.
This quote means that no one knows everything and that is why we have rhetoric. Because we do not know everything we will have different view points on different matters forcing us to use rhetoric to convence others of what we believe. This is the fate of humanity because even though we advance our knowlege we can never know everything foorcing us to use rhetoric to get our view-point across.
I believe this means that we all have our own opinions about different things throughout the world. When someone uses rhetoric, they are trying to persuade someone into thinking something different. Therefore, this quote means that when using rhetoric, this is all we have instead of all the knowledge of everything. Since we do not know everything, we use rhetoric is persuade others in their thoughts and opinions.
In order to increase our knowledge and learn, not only facts but everything, we have to convey someone to make a point and get them to either think about it or even believe in it. If omniscience was what we did have instead of rhetoric, then we would have nothing to learn or add to our knowledge. However, no human being is all-knowing so we have to use rhetoric to convey our message across for others to learn by. This will increase everyone's knowledge, not only of facts, but with philosophies and everything knowledge that is available to us in the world.
It is clear now that rhetoric basically means the art of persuasion. I believe that this quote means that rhetoric can be used as a tool to to enhance the knowledge we do know, instead of dwell on the information we do not understand. No one in the world knows everything, but if one can make a decent argument and persuade an audience, he or she is ahead of those who cannot. It is impossible for a human being to be all knowing in awareness and perception, yet one can use rhetoric to enhance their knowledge for basically anything.
This quote is saying that instead of knowing everything, we can use rhetoric. Instead of knowing about everything that happens, we are able to make up our own opinion and judgments about what is going on. Having all knowledge does not give us the freedom to really develop our own ideas and opinions like rhetoric does.
I think that this quote is saying that instead of pretending we know everyting, rhetoric is understanding that we do not. Omniscience is being all knowing, but I think that when we have truly mastered rhetoric we know that we can never be truly all knowing. Instead of trying to achieve knowledge in everything, this quote is saying we must instead master rhetoric.
The quote from Anne is basically stating that since we can not know everything we use rhetoric as a tool to gain knowledge and understand of topics that are hard to understand. Rhetoric is a tool that helps us persuade and helps others understand more about certain topics. From reviewing what my peers responses say, I mainly gather than rhetoric is a way of persuasion, as well as a different way to view certain subject; almost like a new light on certain matters. I think that rhetoric can be used in many different ways my many different people. From my what I read I see a common agreement that rhetoric is used for persuasion. This quote is basically saying that humans use rhetoric as a different way to learn, and gain knowledge.
I think Ann Berthoff is trying to say that we do not know everything so we use rhetoric to gain theoretical knoledge. She means that when we cannot know something for certain we make a theory about it by using Rhetoric. We logically find ways to get a better understanding of things with only the knowledge we already knew.
Rhetoric uses the art of persuasion. This means that people's opinions can vary and they are not set in stone. Human beings are not all knowing; therefore, we can have room to gain more knowledge and improve our ways of thinking. When using rhetoric it does not necessarily mean that we have chosen one side as opposed to the other, but rhetorical techniques can sometimes encourage people to think deeply about different positions or perspectives.
What Ann Berthoff is saying with this quote, is that instead of having the ability to know everything that there is to know about the world, humans instead have the power of rhetoric. By using rhetoric, the art of persuasion, someone can persuade his or her audience that the information that he or she presents on a particular topic is correct. If someone can convince those around him or herself that the information that he or she gives is always correct, then it will give the illusion that the person presenting is omniscient.
I believe that this quote is trying to convey many thoughts. In general, people think to be influential, one has to posses an ample amount of knowledge. In reality, having all of the knowledge in the world is not as important as being able to use rhetoric. This quote is trying to say that it is more important to speak with eloquence and ease about a topic than to have all the information and not have a good way to share it with others. In the end, rhetoric is all about sharing information and giving people insight and possessing a large amount of knowledge is not necessarily essential.
This quote means that we don't know everything in the world, we use rhetoric. With that we can persuade people into thinking a certain way. By doing this you can both teach and obtain knowledge from other people
I believe the author was saying that we human beings cannot being all knowing, but we have another power called rhetoric. Rhetoric lets humans beings use the knowledge they already have, instead of what they don't. Through rhetoric, humans can focus on what they do know and share that knowledge with others and make them think the same way. It is almost like humans get closer to omniscience through their use of rhetoric.
By seeing rhetoric around us daily we get to have a look at how people think. Producers put their thoughts into ads and musicians pour out their feelings into songs. The more people put out there for the public to see, the more the public knows about how they think. The more we interact with people and the more we pay attention to our surroundings, the more we know about everyone involved.
This means that, instead of knowing everything, we use rhetoric to figure things out. People attempt to persuade us. Unless we want to blindly trust them, we research things so that we will know what to do. The research helps us learn more, which brings us closer to knowing everything, even though that will never happen.
In order for us as humans to say we are omniscient we must have the knowledge to know everything. Instead, we have rhetoric. We have the ability to influence and persuade one another, rather than know everything there is to know. I think this quote is trying to describe to us that we as humans do not know everything, however we do possess the ability to have an opinion on something and try to influence others to believe the same way we do. This way we can look at things from different perspectives and become a more well-rounded individual.
This quote means that we can use rhetoric to gain knowledge instead of omniscience. By using rhetoric, we are able to understand other people's ways of thought and opinions and this can add to our knowledge of the world. Having omniscience may mean infinite knowledge but this may never be possible without the help of rhetoric. This is because it is not possible to know all information about the world without knowing the point of view of others.
I think that this means that instead of knowing everything, we can use rhetoric. Rhetoric can help us develop our own judgements and opinions about things, instead of just automatically knowing it all. It lets us be more creative and more of an understanding person. We can use it to help us gain more knowledge and become a better individual. Basically we are almost able to have omniscience through rhetoric.
