Journal 9/10

Our decisions about social and political issues are often influenced by what we hear, see, and read in the news.  In political cartoons, cartoonists have the opportunity to exaggerate objects and people to call attention to a particular point of view.  Look at the cartoon above and answer the following questions:

  • What is the subject?
  • Identify the symbols.  What do they mean?  Are any of them commonly used in the media?
  • Look at the caricatures.  What is exaggerated?  Who does the character in the cartoon represent?
  • What is the issue being addressed? (Keep in mind that the cartoon was made in March 2011 before nominees were decided.)
  • What conclusions does the cartoonist want the reader to reach?

  1. One of the symbols used is the elephant instead of a perso standing for a republican. The number of shirts that he says "do not fit" stands for all of the 2012 canidates that he thinks are not well fitted to be in office. The issue being addressed is that he does not think that any of the people that could possibly be nominated fit the job. I think maybe the conclusuion that the author wants the reader to reach is that we should look more into the canidates are and why we may not think they are well fit for the job.

  2. The subject is that there are no republican candidates that seem fit to run this year, in 2012. The elephant (commonly used in media) represents the republican party while the clothes represent the candidates for the republican party. Another symbol is the ongoing choices in the closet. You can obviously see that there are almost an infinite amount of choices in the closet yet he says none of them fit, to represent that there are no good candidates this year for the republican party. The message is to show that (at the time) the options for republican candidates seemed few, or none at all. Overall, the author wants the reader to believe that in the next election the only true options will be from the democratic party.

  3. The subject of the cartoon is to influence the voters and who they should vote for. Some symbols of the cartoon is the elephant which is a symbol for republicans. The different color of the suits are to symbolize the different candidates running in the republican party. In this cartoon, all the differnt suits are exaggerated, because there are not that many different candidates. The issue being adressed would be that there are no good republicans that should be elected into office. The conclusion that the cartoonist wants to reach would be that a democrat should be elected into office because they think there are no good republicans candidates.

  4. The subject is the elephant. The closet says 2012 candiates which hold all of the clothes representing the candidates. The Elephant is saying none of them fit meaning none of the candidates are right for the election. The elephant represents a republican. The number of clothing (candidate)options are exagerated as well as the saying none seem to fit. The issue is that none of the candidates running are fit for the job. The cartoonist wants the reader to be persuaded that the election this year is just bogus. That none of the candidates have good enough ideas for America.

  5. In this cartoon it is trying to say that none of the republican cadidates are fir enough for being elected as president. In this cartoon the main symbols i see are the elephant that stands for republican, and the door whiich shows that they are talking about republican candidates. The main exageration in this piece is saying that no candidate at all i worthy of being the president. The character in this selection is an elephant, which is the the symbol of the republicans. The issue that is being shown in this cartoon is that all possible candidates are not as great as the already president Brrack Obama. The author is trying to get the reader to learn more towards democrat than republican views on candidacy.

  6. The subject of this cartoon is political campaigns. The outfit choices represent the political canidates that were to be selected. I'm not sure if any of them are commonly used in the media, although there are many times that different things are used to represent something else. The character in the cartoon represents the republican party and it may be showing that there are so many characters but there isn't one who meets everyone's thoughts. I believe that the issue being adressed is that the canidates may not be a good fit for everyone in the country. I think the cartoonist wants people to look into each canidate and even though this article was written in 2011 I think the artist wanted people to start looking into their choices so that they would become more educated thinkers.

  9. 1. Voting on the presidential campaign.
    2. An elephant symbolizes the republican. All the different colored suits, symbolize the different candidates to vote on. An elephant is always used to represent a republican.
    3. The number of suits is exaggerated quite a bit, there obviously are not that many candidates. The character repesents the republican party.
    4. The issue, is that the republican party has too many people running for office. It's also showing that although there are so many options for candidate, none of the candidates are giving the people what they want.
    5. I think the cartoonist wants the reader to realize that although there are so many candidates running, that they need to look into who they're voting on before voting. Maybe the cartoonist thinks that all of these candidates are not qualified for the duties of being the president.

  10. The cartoon focuses on republican political candidates. The elephant symbolizes the the republican party. The expansive wardrobe exaggerates the point of the endless numbers of candidates, yet none of them are suitable. This cartoon was created to select the nominee for the republican candidate for the next presidential election. At the bottom of the cartoon it says, "Are clown clothes supposed to?" This provides a negative connotation to the republican party. Political parties often degraded other political parties in order to gain dominance.

  11. The subject of the political cartoon is to express the difficulties the Republican party is having. The symbols in the political cartoon are the clothing items. They stand for the different 'candidates' in the 2012 election. I do not think that they are commonly used in the media. The exaggerated caricature is the clothing items bexause there are so many of them. The character in the cartoon represents the Republican party. The issue being adressed is that they cannot come to a conclusion for the Republican candidate for the election. The cartoonist wants to reader to realize the difficulty the politicans are having with coming up with a choice on a single candidate to represent said party.

  12. The subject of this cartoon is saying how most Republicans believe that neither of the 2012 Presidential Candidates are fit to be president in the next election. Some symbols used are the elephant is used to represent Republicans, while the door represents a new presidential candidate walking into office in the next election. The closet full of clothes symbolizes how all the many presidential candidates are different and in each way, is not suited for the character pictured. The amount of clothes symbolizing the presidential candidates is exaggerated because their really are only two. The character in the cartoon may suggest that the author of the drawing is a Republican and may resemble himself in a way. The issue being addressed is that possibly the author is not happy with our culture of democracy and how each candidate is decided and elected. A conclusion the cartoonist wants the reader to reach is that our country needs a candidate who fits the job and will help our economy and country, not someone who runs for the presidency just because he wants to be president. The author is suggesting to the reader that there are too many of the same kind of people (the clothes pictured) that do not want to make any change in the world and are in a way, phonies.

  13. One of the symbols used is all of the colors of clothes and how they are all different just like the candidates. The character is an elephant which stands for the republicans. The issue being addressed is that none of the candidates are right for the job. I think the conclusion is that we need to find someone who can do the job, and do it well.

  14. The political cartoon is about the 2012 presidential election. The elephant in the cartoon is significant because it represents the republican party. I believe that the political cartoon is stating that there are no candidates for the republican party that are good enough to become president. The part in the cartoon that is exaggerated is the amount of clothes that the elephant is looking at. There are not that many candidates for the presidential election, but the clothes represent the candidates. I believe that the issue being addressed is that there are no republican candidates that fit the role of president. Since the cartoon was made before the candidates were picked, perhaps the artist wanted to get the point across that no republican could possibly be a good enough president. The artists wants to persuade the viewer to believe that the democratic party is superior.

  16. The subject is the 2012 election. The elephant is a symbol of the Republican Party and is commonly used to represent the party in the media. The endless number of clothes represents the endless number of candidates. An endless number of candidates or possibilities is exaggerated as also the quote "Not one of them fits." The cartoonist wants us to conclude that there is an endless amount of candidates to choose from in the Republican party but none of them are right. The cartoonist is trying to persuade us for the Democratic Party over the Republican party. The cartoonist is biased in favor of the Democrats.

  17. The subject of this political cartoon is basically stating that none of the Republican candidates are good candidates, or they are not a good fit for our country.
The elephant is the symbol for the Republican party, the clothes are a symbol for the Candidates. There are so many different colors and types of clothing that the elephant could have chosen, but he thought that there were was not a good fit for him.
The amount of clothes(or candidates) is exaggerated. The cabinet of clothes just continues on and you can not see and end in the picture. The character represents the republican party because the elephant is the sign for the Republican party.
That there were no good candidates to choose from. They are trying to say that there were not good choices for candidates to support the Republican party.
They want to sway the readers into believing that there were no good candidates for the election.

  18. The subject is the 2012 presidential race. Different symbols include the elephant, which is used in reference to the republican party, and the clothes that symbolize the numerous, diverse candidates that could potential represent the republicans. The characture's size and proportions are over exaggerated. The character represents the republican party. The issue addressed is that there are multiple candidates, yet none of them are a completely perfect choice. The cartoonist probably wants the reader to realize that no one candidate is perfect and that they might have to just choose the one that fits best.

  19. The subject of this political cartoon is the 2012 Republican presidential candidates. The symbols are the elephant and the oufits. The elephant represents the future Republican presidential candidate. The outfits represent each of the candidates to show that many say they are good enough but none of them fit the spot for such a big job. In the media, you see elephants used a lot becuase the elephant represents the republican party. The number of candidates is being exagerrated because in the picture it makes it look as if they go on forever. The character (elephant) is representing the job that the republican candidate must fill. The issue being addressed is that there were so many candidates for the republican party, but none of them were perfect for the job. The cartoonist wanted the reader to conclude that there is a ridiculous amount of candidates, none of which are one hundred percent suitable for the big job.

  20. The subject of this carton in the presidential candidancey debate. There a a few symbols used in this picture. First they used an elephant meaning that the opinion was coming from the republican point of view since elephants are often the symbol associated with the republican party. Then the clothes represents the many differnt kind of candidates that are running in this election. The amount of canidates are greatly exagerated in this picture. This means that there are a lot of differnt people running. This is all saying that we have a lot of people in this world that could potenitally be a candidate. However, when one looks at the caption of the picture, one can see that it say, "Are clown clothes supposed to?" So this whole picture is really saying that even if we have a lot of people, none of them have the nessicary qualifications and beliefs to please the republican party as a whole. The artist of this piece is trying to convey the message that although it might look like there are a lot of options for the canidicy, the options will really not fit with the requirements that the republican party wants their candidate to possess.

  21. The subject of the cartoon is 2012 Presidential Election. The symbols are the elephant which often represents republicans in the media. So the cartoonist is trying to demonstrate the fact that the elephant is a republican party member. The suits represent all of the different options the elephant has to "try on". The number of suits is greatly exaggerated, and obviously represent the Republican presidential possible candidates for president. The issue being addressed in the comic is the fact that while there are so many options for presidential candidates for the Republican party, not one of them truly appears to be the "right fit". The artist wants to viewer to reach the conclusion that while there are many options and qualities that certain Republican party members have, none of them fit the bill in all areas like the ideal candidate should fit.

  22. The subject is the 2012 Presidential candidacy debate. They used an elephant as a symbol for the Republican Party. Another symbol would be all the different shirts which represents the different candidates and ideas. The elephant is commonly used in the media as a symbol for the Republican Party. The number of shirts is exaggerated in the closet. It is showing the different view points and beliefs of differing parties using a hyperbole. The character is the picture represents a registered voter who is indecisive about who they should vote for. I think the issue that is being shown here is that there are so many different ideas and nominees but there is not one that represents the people, or voter. The artists wants the reader to understand that we as voters should pick the candidate that best represents our own beliefs and interests and not others.

  23. The subject of this cartoon is the republicans in the primary had a hard time choosing their candadite. It is rebublicans because it is an elephant(their symbol). It is exaggerated that not any of the clothes fit because Romney was always ahead in the primary. However the people completing against him had their polls shot up and down as the Rebulicans were looking for an alterantive to Romney. The bottom right caption of the picture reveals that the artist is against all of the choices as he calls them clown cloths. He is trying to persade people to the democrates.

  24. The subject is the 2012 candidates. The symbol is the elephant because the republicans are use a picture of an elephant to show the side they are on. They mean that the republicans are speaking in this add. Campain adds use the elephant for republican candidates. The number of outfits on the rack is exagerated. The character represents the republican party. The issue of too many candidates running for presidencey when none of them would be good enough for president. The conclusion says that the republican party needs a good candidate meant for the 2012 election.

  25. The subject is the possible candidates for the Republican Party in the 2012 Presidential election. The elephant symbolizes the Republican party, which is commonly used in media, and the hanging suits represent the possible Republican candidates for the election. The number of candidates is exaggerated because the closet stretches across the picture. The issue being addressed in the cartoon is that the Republican party could not find a suitable candidate for the 2012 Presidential election because none of them were what they really wanted. The cartoonist wants the reader to realize that there isn't a candidate that the Republican Party is willing to be represented by because none of them fit their desires.

  26. The subject is the republican candidates. The elephant represents republicans, it is used in the media often. The suits represent the candidates. The number of candidates is exaggerated. Also the crazy colors of the suits which would imply the radical views a candidate has. The character represents republicans. There are a surplus of suits(candidates), but none of them will fit(are what republicans want). There are too many choices for the republican candidate, but none fit the criteria. The cartoonist wants the reader to conclude that there are an unnecessary amount of different candidates when Republicans only need one that will focus one that fits their criteria.

  27. The subject of this cartoon is the 2012 Republican primary. The first symbol that caught my eye, was the elephant looking for clothes, because an elephant is the symbol of the Republican party. The red and white boxers that the elephant is wearing, could also be inferring to the Republican party, since red and white are the party's colors. Finally, the clothes in the closet, represent the different candidates that the Republican party may have, since the closet is marked 2012 candidates. The character in this cartoon, represents the Republican party, while the different outfits represent the potential candidates for the party. The issue being addressed, is that there are too many candidates to choose from in the Republican party, although there were not as many as there were exaggerated in the picture. The conlusion that the author wants the audience to come to, is that there are too many candidates in the primary.

  28. The subject is that there are not any good Republican candidates. The Republican party is being represented by the elephant. This representation is often used in the media. The closet represents the infinite amount of candidates. The elephant is thinking that none of the candidates are a perfect fit because they have different view points. The author wants is to see that there are many different candidates and that non of them are good enough to be elected.
