Satire and Political Cartoons

Hi, class! I'm sorry that neither I nor Ms. Lowman are here today (I'm sick, she has a family emergency), but what I've got you doing is what we would have been doing anyway. Please make sure to read the Pages tab on our class on My Big Campus because it has instructions on everything you are to do today.

We are beginning a unit on satire, and political cartoons are one form of satire. Take a minute to look up the definition of satire, then look closely at the political cartoons below. In order to fully understand a political cartoon, you must understand the issue behind the image and then you can determine what/who specifically is being ridiculed or scorned. For the two political cartoons, I'd like you to answer the following questions:
  1.  What is the issue the cartoonist is ridiculing (you might have to research the news from last week a bit if you didn't watch/listen then)?
  2. What or who is specifically being ridiculed or scorned?
  3. What is it that the cartoonist wants you, the reader, to think about with this cartoon?
  4. Who is the specific audience these cartoons are targeting?

  13. The Walmart cartoon is portraying the issue of Walmart stores opening for early Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving. The fact that stores opened on that stores opened to make more sales and therefore more money is being ridiculed because it depicts an employee that has given Walmart a black eye. This is showing that even though Walmart was trying to increase their productivity on Black Friday, workers rights activists in turn protested on Black Friday and 'wounded them,' or hurt their productivity. The Walmart company is being specifically ridiculed.
What is it that the cartoonist wants you, the reader, to think about with this cartoon?
The cartoonists wants us to think about whether it is right for stores like Walmart to force employees to work long hours on days like Black Friday. The specific targets of the ad are probably CEOs and executives of stores like Walmart in addition to consumers and workers' rights activists.

The issue the cartoonist is ridiculing is Romney's statement about self-deportation. The cartoonist wants American's to think about immigration and how we should handle it as a country. HE wants them to realize that, with the exception of Native Americans, we all came from immigrants. The specific audience would probably be lawmakers who would make immigration laws as well as American people who have strong feelings about immigration.

Who is the specific audience these cartoons are targeting?

  14. 1.What is the issue the cartoonist is ridiculing?
The first cartoon may in reference to the fight that broke out between two WalMart customers over low priced cell phones on black friday, or the worker strike on Black Friday. But it could simply be about how obsessed America has gotten with Black Friday deals and how people will go to great lengths for a good deal.
The second cartoon is protraying how we came into America and pushed the original residents out and founded our nation on that, but when people want to join us we will not let them because we don't want them to push us our of our jobs.
    2. What or who is specifically being ridiculed or scorned?
The first cartoon ridicules the crazy crowds that get so worked up about Black Friday sales and material things.
The second cartoon riducules our government and our way of thinkning that America is our own and that we can't share it with those seeking a better life.
    3. What is it that the cartoonist wants you, the reader, to think about with this cartoon?
The first cartoon is aimed to make the reader either question their actions over the Black Friday deals or agree with him that it's ridiculous.
The second is to make the reader rethink how quickly they judge legal and illegal immigrants, because none of us would be here if it weren't for immigration.
    4. Who is the specific audience these cartoons are targeting?
The Black Friday ad is probably targeting the crazy crowds to maybe make them regret their actions.
The second is aimed at the people that judge too quickly and make them rethink

  17. 1st add
This add is ridiculing walmart and its workers because the workers went on strike in order to get better working conditions at walmart. I might be wrong but I think the author wants us to laugh at the workers there becuase the add makes the worker look pretty ugly. This cartoon is targeting black friday shoppers at walmart and people that watch the news because they get the humor in this add unlike others.
    2nd Add
This add is targeting the self-deportation issue that some republicans purposed for immagrants. Republicans are being ridiculed because their idea is being proven to not work. The author wants the reader to realize how stupid the idea was by reminding the reader of the Native Americans. This cartoon is targeting Ammericans that are able to vote and, more specificly, poloticians.

  19. The first cartoon is ridiculing the insanity of Black Friday shoppers, and it is also ridiculing Wal-Mart for not compensating employees apporpriately when they have to deal with situations like these. Specifically, I believe that Black Friday shoppers and Wal-Mart management are being ridiculed. The author of this cartoon wants to make people feel ashamed for acting the way that they treated, and the author also wants Wal-Mart workers to receive better benefits. The audience of the first ad is Black Friday shoppers and Wal-Mart. The second ad is riducling the idea of self-deportation. Specifically, Mitt Romney is being scorned by the ad. The cartoonist really wants the audience to think about the idea of self-deportation, and how ridiculous it is. The cartoonist is targeting supporters of MItt Romney and his plan.

  20. I think this cartoon is ridiculing black Friday and the workers who are working then and also illegal immigration. I believe that the workers rights unions are being ridiculed because on black Friday the stores thought that they were going to make alot of money because they opened early but then the store actually wasn't a happy store it was more distraught and workers were fighting for their rights. The second article was addressing that if Romney was elected then there would be reasons for the illegal immigrants to self deport because they have better opportunities in their own home land. I think the audience that they are targeting are the illegals and the immigrants that are in our country and also I think the first article is targeting the people of America.

4.The cartoon's audience is all people that work.

Truthfully, America belongs to the native americans.
2.America and its immigration targets is being ridiculed.
3.The cartoonist wants us to think about how in one point in history we were the immigrants coming to America with other people trying to get rid of us. Now we are trying to do the same to immigrants. We are in no position to be acting like America is ours and we were here first.
